Weekend Video – Billykirk

Not to get too “americana” on you guys two weeks in a row, but some of the most beautiful videos to be produced about menswear recently happen to be focused on age old techniques and looks.  This is one of my favorite video’s about the production and invention of an idea in the world of fashion.  It is just two brothers that wanted to make something that mattered, and that they did.  Like it or love it, the process and idea that goes into this brand is very unique in a world of expedited and cheap production.  From the mainline Billykirk and also for the more affordable Urban Outfitters collaboration The Brothers Bray  & Co. these guys have made some stuff that every guy can enjoy.

A Time for Chocolate Makers

The Selby is the the place to see cool people in their cool places.  Their latest subject are the boys from The Mast Brothers at their Chocolate Factory.  No Gene Wilder in sight, but a beautiful look at creating chocolate from start to finish.

Other great Selby subjects include:

Fine Listen: The Hot Rats

You have to love when your day ends with a fresh discovery.  Thanks to the Daily Dose over at Flavorwire, I’ve discovered my new favorite listen:  The Hot Rats.

Supergrass’ Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey form this new group under the direction of producer Nigel Godrich (client list includes Beck, REM, U2, Paul McCartney to name a few).  From the minds of these gents we get a spot-on first album where they cover “their favourite tracks.”

The list includes the Velvet Underground, Gang of Four, the Kinks, Elvis Costello, Bowie and more.

Our suggestion:

1.  Follow them on Twitter.

2.  Make plans to pick up the album when it drops next Monday, Jan 25.

3.  Watch the below.

Monday Morning Obsession

Do you ever get to Monday morning and the only thing that gets you going is some certain thing you couldn’t get out of your mind all weekend, or all the previous week.  You just have been waiting to work a certain look into your attire, or you couldn’t wait to get your hands on a magazine or book, or get that album going in your car…by yourself.  Well, enter the Monday Morning Obsession.

On to the point. I have recently noticed some really cool guys taking the red brick soled shoe to a new level.  Previously reserved for prepster suede bucks in the summer and early fall, the red brick sole has taken over all style of shoes for all seasons.  I mean there is even a shoe company started by the talented man Mark Mcnairy called Red Brick Soul.  Every guy can find a pair that fit him, from suede bucks to my personal favorite pictured below, the Quoddy camp mocs.

Fine Time Waste: Mad Men Yourself

Among many obsessions of mine is Mad Men.  Though its been floating around the web a while, here’s a good way to waste time and embrace your inner Mad Menian.

Bets and I

Weekend Video

This video has been around the blogosphere for a little bit, but everytime I see it I get really inspired. I like to think this is what it looks like to be a shop owner, and the beautiful denim is nice to look at as well.

Fine Read & My Own Ten

I have really enjoyed diving in to Corduroy Magazine‘s website, and specifically, their recurring series Things That Never Go Out Of Style.

Reading through the lists, you get a sense for what inspires those that inspire others.  That formula for inspiration has led me to offer my own Ten Things That Never Go Out Of Style:

1.  Your Best Pair of Jeans.  Familiar and welcoming – like a family member.

2.  Chivalry.

3.  Brown Belt.  My father has a great one.  I have a great one.  Time after time, the brown belt comes back to add a caramel accent to navy, khaki and heather grey.

4. The Stones.  Jumpin’ Jack Flash will always be a gas, gas, gas.

5. Espresso.

6. Journals.  Men need a place to record their thoughts, jot their to-dos and make a note of their eurekas.

7. Boxers.

8.  The Graduate.  Iconic.

9. The Zebra Pen.

10. High Cotton.  Jake Davis reminded me recently about the simple beauty of where I grew up.

Shoes of the Presidents

In honor of the J&Ms I’m wearing today, I present you with the coolest thing I’ve seen on the web in a while:  Johnston & Murphy’s Shoes of the Presidents.

Winter White Done Right

I am not saying every guy could or should pull off the winter white look, but when done right it has a real stand-out look.  While traveling to Heidelberg Germany over new years I spotted an older gentleman at the outdoor ice skating rink just killing it.  First off he was the best skater out there so that helped his overall style.  But secondly he was pulling off an almost all white look in the dead of winter.  He was kind of refreshing in a sea of dark browns and blacks, plus he made ice skating look like something every gentleman should know how to do, and maybe they do in Germany.  Like I said, attempt this at your own risk.  Done well and you will stand out for all the right reasons.

And for good measure, and a way to get the look dressed up (or at least more dressed up,) click below for a few photos courtesy of The Sartorialist.
